Embracing Korean Heritage through Modern Design
Mimidar, led by Han Sang-mi, blends traditional Korean aesthetics with contemporary functionality. Inspired by her background in metal crafts and vibrant experiences in product design clubs, Han set out to merge everyday items with the allure of Korean culture.
“During university, I majored in metal crafts and actively participated in a design club. Seeing people appreciate and purchase my creations fueled my passion,” Han reminisces.
The Path to Creation
Han’s journey was far from easy. A transformative trip to Japan in 2017 revealed how traditional motifs were seamlessly incorporated into daily products, inspiring her to do the same for Korean culture. She launched her first product, the Ilwolobongdo pencil case, via crowdfunding in 2018. Despite the challenges of solo work, her campaign triumphantly raised 18 million won.
“Crowdfunding was a novel concept then, but it was my only option. I personally visited over 100 factories, learned the production process, and crafted the first samples by hand,” Han shares.
Overcoming Obstacles
Without capital or a team, Han relentlessly visited numerous factories, negotiating and learning the production intricacies. Her dedication paid off with successful crowdfunding, boosting her confidence and resources for expansion.
“Carrying a backpack filled with leather, I walked around Seongsu-dong, visiting every workshop I could find. The process was grueling, but I learned invaluable lessons from generous factory owners,” she recounts.
Storytelling as a Key Differentiator
Mimidar’s unique edge lies in the storytelling embedded in each product. For instance, the Goryeo Celadon phone case, inspired by historical Korean ceramics, deeply resonated with consumers, achieving massive sales and endorsements from celebrities like BTS's RM.
“I don’t just replicate traditional designs visually; I delve into their history and cultural significance. The Goryeo Celadon phone case, which took over 100 color tests to perfect, exemplifies this approach,” Han explains.
Innovation and Future Aspirations
Han Sang-mi continues to innovate, focusing on preserving traditional designs' authenticity while appealing to younger generations. Her commitment to quality and cultural integrity has positioned Mimidar as a leader in cultural preservation through modern design.
“Starting as a maker was challenging, but seeing the appreciation for our cultural heritage in modern forms makes it worthwhile. Each product tells a story, connecting the past with the present and resonating with consumers who value meaningful designs,” Han concludes.
