[Joseon Minhwa] Sagunja Collage Case
A Tribute to Korean Traditional Art
The Sagunja Collage Case is a modern interpretation of Sagunja (四君子), the Four Noble Plants of Korea, traditionally depicted in Korean literati paintings (Muninhwa, 文人畵). Featuring plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, and bamboo, this design symbolizes the virtues of integrity, resilience, and refinement. Each element is carefully reimagined using the iridescent hues of mother-of-pearl, honoring the elegance of Joseon-era aesthetics.
This case is made-to-order, requiring an average of 3 to 5 business days for production before shipment.
What is Sagunja?
Sagunja (四君子), or the Four Noble Plants, is a significant theme in Korean and East Asian ink painting, originating from Confucian traditions. Each plant represents a distinct virtue, often admired by scholars and artists during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897):
- Plum Blossom (梅, Maehwa) – Symbolizes perseverance and hope, as it blooms even in the harsh winter.
- Orchid (蘭, Nancho) – Represents modesty and refinement, embodying the grace of a true scholar.
- Chrysanthemum (菊, Gukhwa) – Stands for resilience and longevity, flourishing in the late autumn when most flowers fade.
- Bamboo (竹, Juk) – A symbol of integrity and strength, as it bends but never breaks under pressure.
These four plants were deeply admired by Confucian scholars in Korea, who sought to reflect their virtues in both their art and way of life. The Sagunja theme remains an essential part of Korean Minhwa (folk paintings) and traditional crafts today.
