During a recent city council meeting in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, a city council member made headlines by publicly proposing marriage. Park Cheol-soo (47), a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, chose an unusual venue for his proposal during a municipal questionnaire session, which has ignited debate.

At the 2nd plenary session of the 325th extraordinary session held by the Gwangyang City Council, Park interrupted proceedings to share a personal story. Expressing his desire not to miss the opportunity, Park explained his unconventional approach, stating, "I chose this method because I felt compelled to make a public announcement to propose to this woman," before asking a female official from Gwangyang City Hall, "Will you marry me?"

Park's impromptu proposal was broadcasted in real time within the city office, as he arrived with a bouquet of flowers to seek the woman's approval for marriage. The two had reportedly been dating for about two months following an introduction.

Criticism swiftly followed Park's actions, with internet users and citizens questioning the appropriateness of his private matters being addressed in a public setting. Some argued that the council chamber was not the place for such personal declarations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the council's role and duty without personal interference.

In response to the backlash, Park issued an apology to Korean media, acknowledging the controversy surrounding his decision. He explained that despite expecting criticism, he felt compelled to express his sincere intentions due to his late entry into a relationship. Park expressed regret for any discomfort caused to citizens and government officials in Gwangyang, emphasizing his heartfelt but misguided attempt to share his personal joy in a public forum.
